Sand that moves.
Rules that don't.

Silver Lake State Park's ORV area is the only place east of the Mississippi River where you can legally drive an off-road vehicle on open sand dunes. Roughly 450 acres of it, sitting between Silver Lake on one side and Lake Michigan on the other.

Two things catch people out, and neither is the terrain. The permits are three separate purchases, not one, and the Recreation Passport is the one most people arrive without. And on a summer weekend you need a parking voucher before you tow, not when you get there.

This guide keeps those in one place, alongside the part most coverage skips entirely: what the sand is actually doing on the day you arrive.

01 · THREE DOCUMENTS

Permits & licences

ORV licence, ORV trail permit, and a Recreation Passport. All three, every machine.

02 · NO MARKED ROUTES

Riding the scramble

450 acres, blind crests, and water on two sides. What a scramble area actually asks of you.

Sand-ready,
not stuck at the gate.

Cell coverage on the dunes is thin, the permits are three separate purchases, and on a summer weekend the parking voucher is decided before you leave home. Sort all of it in the driveway, not in the queue.

PERMITS

Three, not one

ORV licence, ORV trail permit, and a Recreation Passport. Turning up with two of three is the classic mistake.

VOUCHERS

Weekends need one

Mid-May through mid-September, weekends and holidays need a parking voucher. Get it before you tow.

THE SAND

Air down, lock in

12 to 15 PSI and four-wheel drive engaged before you enter, not once you are already buried.
